English Resource Description
During the fourth day of Week 11 in the phonics programme, students will revisit and consolidate their understanding of the graphemes , , and . The objective of this review session is to reinforce this week's learning, as well as to refresh knowledge of previously learned phonemes. The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash Words' activity, where the teacher selects words from prior lessons that contain the target graphemes. These words are written on the board, complete with sound buttons and bars to aid in decoding. The class then works together to sound out each word, focusing on the individual phonemes.
The teaching segment involves writing the graphemes , , and on one side of the board, while pictophones such as Ice Cream, Eagle, Egg, Ear, Aircraft, and Earth are placed on the other. Children are invited to draw lines connecting each grapheme to its corresponding phonemes, reinforcing the sound and spelling relationships. The practice activity, 'Spot the Fake', presents the children with a mix of real and nonsense words on coins. They sound-talk through each word and sort them into a treasure chest for real words or into a bin for fake ones, such as 'peach', 'rie', and 'geaf'. Finally, the application of their skills is tested with a 'Yes/No' activity using flashcards. Children decode phrases and use the flashcards to display the correct answer, with volunteers reading each phrase aloud to conclude the lesson.
